Why do certain buildings instantly feel legible, comfortable, and human, while others don’t? In 'Our Key Tech? Sure!' (#56), we explore why 21st-century designers are increasingly turning to biology, evolution, and neuroscience to understand how humans actually perceive and move through the built environment. We feature Ann Sussman, Architect's eye-tracking research, which is playing a major role in advancing human-centered design in architecture. We discuss first fixations, thigmotaxis (wall-hugging behavior), pattern recognition, symmetry, and why our responses to buildings are deeply rooted in human evolution. We also highlight the Human Architecture + Planning Institute (HAPI) Certification Course, a 7-lesson bundle on human interaction with the built environment featuring videos and embedded quizzes. The course can earn you 3.5 AIA Learning Units (3 HSW) in case you're an architect renewing your AIA membership. 👉 Learn more about the HAPI Certification Course: https://thehapi.thinkific.com/courses...
