In the episode "The Enchanted Pool" from the Mahabharata, the Pandava brothers, during their twelfth year in the forest, grew thirsty and tired while chasing a deer. Yudhistira sent each of his brothers, Nakula, Sahadeva, Arjuna, and Bhima, to find water. Despite a warning voice, they drank from the enchanted pool and fell unconscious. Yudhistira, worried about his brothers, found them lying unconscious by the pool. Understanding the voice belonged to a Yaksha, he decided to answer its questions. The Yaksha asked various questions, and Yudhistira responded wisely. Impressed with his answers, the Yaksha offered to revive one brother. Yudhistira chose Nakula, explaining that he wanted to be fair since Nakula was the son of Madri, his father's second wife. The Yaksha revealed himself as Yama, the Lord of Death, who had tested Yudhistira's virtue. Pleased with Yudhistira's impartiality, Yama revived all the brothers, blessed them, and then disappeared.
