Hi, this bat dragon project was done during my final Semester at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. It was by far the most challenging creature project I ever did, and the first animation was very especially tricky to pull off. I experimented lot with Ragdoll Dynamics to help with the contacts. The Project is inspired by a concept by Ognjen Sporin. Most Dragons are hybrid creatures and combine anatomical aspects of reptiles and mammals. But their wings are mostly inspired by bats. I had the goal to create an anatomically plausible dragon that is primarily built on bat anatomy. This deep dive on bats and their movement was super fun and interesting. In my final design, I pushed the shapes more toward a recognizable elongated dragon silhouette and also stylized the head to a certain degree. Finishing this project marks the end of my student life and the beginning of a new chapter. The past two and a half years at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg GmbH have been an absolute blast and an incredible learning experience. I want to express my sincere gratitude to my amazing animation mentor, Michael Aerni and to Juri Stanossek and Alexandra Stautmeister for their awesome feedback.
