Have you ever seen the Welland Canal empty? In this video, you will get to see a drained canal. The Welland Canal that is located in the Niagara Region of Canada, is extremely vital as it acts as a crucial shipping link between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, allowing large vessels to bypass Niagara Falls and navigate the Great Lakes system, thus playing a significant role in the transportation of goods and supporting the economies of the surrounding regions. For about 9 months of the year, the canal moves around 3500 Vessels during the period of Late March - Late December (subject to change, based on weather). Due to the location of the Canal and the high volume of traffic, at some point, the Canal will need repairs and maintenance. This happens during the winter, Early January - late March (Subject to Ice). At the end of each shipping season, the canal closes for approximately 10 weeks. During this time, many sections of the canal are drained, mainly that from Locks 1 through to 7 and lock 8, The canal between 7 & 8 remains filled. Essential inspections and repairs are done to structures along the canal (walls, lock gates, bridges, etc).
