Robert de Visée, suite in D minor from the Livre de Guittarre (1682) 00:00 Prelude 00:39 Allemande 04:28 Courante 06:31 Sarabande 08:15 Gigue 09:48 Passacaille Without doubt Visee's most famous work is the suite in D minor, from his second guitar book (1686). In fact D minor is one of the most convenient keys for the baroque guitar. That the composer had previously published a suite in this same key (in his first book, from 1682) is not widely known. In the latter, the composer explores everything the guitar is capable of, and it can be considered as one of Visée's most successful guitar works. For this recording the ‘bourdon tuning’ has been used, with low octave strings on the fourth and fifth courses of the five-course guitar. Today most baroque guitarists make use of the so-called ‘French tuning’ with only a bourdon (a low octave) on the fourth course, while the fifth course consists of two high a’s. For my ideas on the tuning(s) Visée may have used, read my article ‘Robert de Visée and the French tuning’ https://lexeisenhardt.com/file/Vis%C3...
