Fischer Surgical Inc. manufactures the NCI (Neusidl Corneal Inserter) used in Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty, or DSEK. Normally, DSEK requires difficult surgical manipulation in addition to a secondary irrigation source to maintain the anterior chamber. Widely practiced donor insertion techniques include folding or rolling the sample which can cause damage before insertion. The NCI was developed to simplify the DSEK procedure and reduce the troubles associated with the other methods of corneal insertion. The NCI is a self-sealing and irrigating inserter; it gently rolls the donor sample with no overlap. Since the tissue is not folded, the risk of inserting the tissue upside-down is eliminated. The NCI makes DSEK more simple and minimizes the cost normally associated with the procedure.
