Typhoon Connie's rough seas collapsed the forward flight decks of the carriers USS Hornet, CV-12, and USS Bennington, CV-20, on June 5, 1945 under pounding waves southeast of Okinawa. The ships were soon in danger from Japanese aircraft attacks when the storm subsided. Unable to launch aircraft over the bow in normal fashion, Hornet and Bennington steamed in reverse on June 7, providing as much wind over the deck as possible as F6F Hellcat fighters took off to the rear, to provide combat air patrol over the ships. The carriers had been ordered to steam in a direction that ultimately made them vulnerable to the typhoon. In addition to the spectacular forward deck destruction, the Bennington and Hornet lost aircraft damaged or overboard due to the storm. By June 8, 1945, USS Bennington was sent to the U.S. Navy anchorage at Leyte Gulf where heavy-duty repairs were made to the ship's mangled flight deck. On June 13, Hornet was sent to San Francisco for repairs. USS Bennington and USS Hornet served the postwar Navy for many years. Bennington was sold for scrap in 1994.
