Traditionally, on the Friday after Thanksgiving, families and friends gather on the downtown Bloomington square to listen to Christmas music performed by the Bloomington Brass Band, drinking hot chocolate and eating popcorn and chestnuts, while waiting for Santa Claus to arrive to light the Canopy of Lights over the downtown square. This is an event that was reconvened after a forty year absence from the square in 1984 by my friend Tom Gallagher when he became the first director of what is now called Downtown Bloomington, Inc. I remember Tom asking me at the time what I thought about having someone roasting chestnuts at the Canopy of Lights. I told him Mel Tormé would approve. This year, a super-spreader event like the Canopy of Lights ceremony will not be happening. About six weeks ago, I received an inquiry from the current Executive Director of Downtown Bloomington, Inc, Talisha Coppock: "I am wondering if you have video of any past Canopy of Lights lighting ceremonies? We thought it might be fun to post some past footage and wish all a happy holiday... since we cannot have the live event this year." I initially shared with Talisha a video I had posted to YouTube eight years ago and told her I also had footage from 2018. • Bloomington Canopy of Lights Her response: "This is phenomenal!! I think it is the only history of this event. So can we repost it for this year's event since we will not have a live event? It would be interesting to see the 2018 but this one is perfect." That's how the process of making this video came about. I also had footage from the 1998 Canopy of Lights that I had always loved that I was able to dig out of my archive. We planned to tape the Monroe County Commissioners doing a little intro and commentary to introduce the archival videos but, as you can see, that evolve into a more elaborate production. I'm quite pleased with how the video turned out. So, as you gather virtually with family and friends this Thanksgiving, stay safe and enjoy this nostalgic stroll down the Canopy of Lights memory lane and look forward to a time we can gather again and enjoy this spectacular event in downtown Bloomington.
