BCB Fire Dragon alcohol fuel review. "Kitchen laboratory tested" OK here is a first a non field test: the reason to try and eliminate some variables such as wind, to test the burning efficacy of these alcohol gels at boiling water. BCB say 8min burn time, I got close to 10 minutes but without wind and using a large surface area burner placed into a Esbit clone solid fuel stove. They burn clean with no odor, why wouldn't they, they are after all Ethanol based which according to BCB labelling has been denatured, presumably to dissuade people from eating them! They are extremely flammable and like using petrol in a fuel stove these "solid fuel" (they are not in fact genuine solid fuel-unlike Hexamine tablets) blocks will easily ignite from a naked flame even if just close to the block and probably easier still if in a confined space, so beware when lighting them. Cost/price wise they appear to be much more expensive than the regular solid fuel tablets and unlike regular solid fuel tablets, one needs to dispose of the plastic containers once ejecting the fuel gel itself. There is a solid combustion product/residue left after burning. It was very stubborn to remove from the metal dish and I had to scrub at it with steel wool and a knife blade. As for burn speed well you can see my results of the Fire Dragon gel fuel. BCB says via their tests, it burns quicker "than meths" I rather doubt this as "meths" is also denatured ethanol by the addition of pyridine and or the addition of methanol to make it poisonous. BCB is using Denatonuim as the denaturing agent, otherwise known as "Bitrex"
