Part 4 in a 7 part series on Mole Health. Dermatologist Dr Stefanie Williams (MD) details having moles checked by a dermatologist. "A mole check is completely painless. That's the nice thing about having mole checks. If you have other tests, you might have slightly invasive tests which might potentially be painful. The great thing about a mole check, that is just eyes, and noninvasive devices. They will ask you to undress onto your underwear very likely. Then they will have a look at all of your moles. They will have a look at spaces you didn't even know you could have moles like between your toes or on your scalp, between the hair. So you can have moles in all of those locations and the dermatologist will have a look at the entire skin surface and make sure that all of your moles look nice and healthy. If they notice one where they think, "That could potentially be not so healthy any longer," they will then get a device out which is called a dermatoscope and the dermatoscope makes the invisible pigment net under the skin of that particular mole visible. In the vast majority of cases, after examination with the dermatoscope, the dermatologist will be able to tell you is that mole healthy or is it not healthy or it suspicious, is it in between. This whole process takes just about half an hour. So it's a really quick and easy thing. There's really no excuse not to get a mole check done once per year."
