Follow this video recipe from the National Trust to make a Christmas pudding to tuck into after your festive meal – if you still have room! This dessert recipe can be made at any point in the run-up to Christmas, whether it’s on Stir-up Sunday or on Christmas Eve. Remember that the further in advance you make it, the more mature the flavours will be. You can find a vegetarian, alcohol-free recipe for a Christmas pudding on our website: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/disc... In this video, you’ll join Val Noble, National Trust Chef, and folklore expert Ben Gazur at Selworthy Farmhouse, a National Trust holiday cottage on the Holnicote estate in Somerset. They’ll take you through the steps of the recipe and shed some light on the history and folklore behind the Christmas pudding. Stir-up Sunday is traditionally the earliest day that people begin making their Christmas puddings. It falls on the last Sunday before Advent, and is inspired by the Anglican Book of Common Prayer where the reading for that day begins with the words"Stir up, we beseech thee O Lord." In Victorian times, family members would take it in turns to stir the pudding while making a wish. This recipe is one for the whole family, so why not get younger family members involved in this tradition? The Christmas pudding originates from medieval England, and early versions of the recipe resulted in a pottage, which is a thick soup or stew, rather than a cake-like pudding. It would also be served at the start of the meal rather than at the end.
