TESTING NIKON BRAW from the Z6 in DaVinci Resolve 17 Recently one of Cinechimp's long time subscribers sent me over some of his Nikon Z6 BRAW footage for review. Massive shout out too WILL. Thanks mate you're a legend! So today I am going to discuss what I found playing around with Will's footage in DaVinci Resolve 17. I am really amazed how well the NLOG conversion to Blackmagic Design RAW (BRAW) holds up. It has huge recoverability, edits like butter on hot toast. Is super quick to render. Has very pleasing colours. Blacks. Highlights. You name it. The teaming up between Nikon and Blackmagic Design is quite something. BRAW is a superior and robust RAW format. There are some things that I did find that stood out and are presented in the video. Nikon has released firmware updates for its Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras that makes it possible to recored external Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) over HDMI to a compatible recorder. Firmware version 3.20 for both the Z6 and Z7 features two major changes regarding Raw video workflows. The first is that both the Z6 and Z7 can now output Blackmagic Raw video to the Video Assist 5” 12G HDR and Video Assist 7” 12G HDR, released in September 2019. In order to make use of the feature, Z6 and Z7 owners must have purchased the Raw video output upgrade from Nikon, which costs $199 requires the camera(s) to be sent into a Nikon service center. The second Raw-related change in firmware version 3.20 is that you can now use ISO and Kelvin color temperature Raw controls when editing ProRes Raw video in Final Cut Pro X (version 10.4.9 or later). Other changes in the updates include new support for the Nikkor Z 50mm F1.2 S lens and an array of bug fixes. The best part of all is this is now Nikon users will be able to edit the RAW videos in DaVinci Resolve17. At Cine, we’re all about budget-friendly cameras, lenses, and techniques.
