Live Footage from the studio, playing the Gigue from Suite for Solo Viola by British composer Imogen Holst, the only child of Gustav Holst. The Suite was written by a young twenty-three-year-old Imogen, and was later given as a wedding present to her school friend, Leila, in June 1932. Interestingly, the piece was premiered by a violist by the name of Violet Brough, but has until now never been recorded. Imogen was a very accomplished composer and conductor in her own right, mostly known as Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh Festival. She spent many years as an assistant to Benjamin Britten alongside recording and editing her father’s work. The harmonic landscape that permeates the Suite does in some way remind the listener of her father’s work, and makes extensive use of the whole-tone scale. The ominous ‘Prelude’ is followed by a traditional medieval dance in 5/4, the ‘Cinquepace’, then a mournful ‘Sarabande’, and finally a lively ‘Gigue’ wraps up the suite in a flurry of notes.
