Join us on a walk from Boxgrove to Halnaker (pronounced "Ha’naker") windmill and back to Boxgrove Priory. Due to its cinematic nature, this video is best watched on a large screen such as a TV, to fully appreciate the visual detail and immersive aural experience we try to convey. 0:00 Intro drone flight 0:41 Walking to Halnaker windmill 2:42 Halnaker windmill 4:53 Halnaker village 7:35 Boxgrove village 8:07 Boxgrove Priory and church 12:47 More of Boxgrove village 14:26 Outro drone flight We started our walk at Boxgrove village hall, and made our way along the Windmill Trail. Skirting the edge if Tinwood vineyard, we headed north east toward the Halnaker tree tunnel, which forms part of the ancient Stane Street - the Roman road from London to Chichester. We then headed up Halnaker Hill to the 18C tower mill that is Halnaker Mill. A mill has stood on the site since the 16C but the current building is obviously later. In late 2021, the sweeps (sails) were removed for refurbishment, and sadly had not been reinstalled at the time of our walk. It was very windy at the top of the hill, but we did manage to get a few clips from the drone. Back down the hill, through the enchanting tree tunnel, we made our way to Halnaker village, though now little more than a hamlet, with the quite busy A285 road running through it. Halnaker is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, but there are indications that humans inhabited the area for thousands of years BC. The discovery of "Boxgrove Man" in the area in 1993 takes its history back almost 500,000 years! A gentle stroll south took us back to Boxgrove. There are many historic, listed buildings in the village, and we did our best to film them. The main attraction, of course is Boxgrove Priory and the parish church of St Mary and St Blaise. The priory was built in the 12C, although a church has existed on the site since Anglo Saxon times. Remaining today is the Priory Church of St Mary and St Blaise which has been in use since the 12C and the remains of the 14C priory lodging house, where the Prior entertained his guests and travellers could find lodgings. Although the western part of the original monastic church, the chapter house, cloisters and other monastic buildings have been lost over time, the church remains a fine example of Norman and Gothic architecture, with more than a trace of the original monastic buildings still evident. By the time we were at the Priory, the wind was gusting at speeds above what our little drone could handle. We were therefore only able to get a few clips, and were unable to put the church and Priory into the context of the wider area. We hope to return for another drone flight soon. We hope you enjoyed watching as much as we enjoyed walking. If you did, please remember to click the thumbs up (like) button, and comment.
