Ancient Landscapes We leave the ocean behind us, but it is for the highly anticipated Pilbara Region of Western Australia. Everything we have heard about the Pilbara has excited us from the start of our journey. In particular the Karijini National Park. In part one we make our way to Tom Price, a town founded around the mining industry. It is a great place to stock up on supplies and is definitely worth a stop over. We stayed at the caravan park, that is just out of town. Already we are feeling something completely different about this place. The mining is prominent in town, but as you venture around you start to get an idea of what the Pilbara has in store for us. A must do is to go to the summit of Mount Nameless. Whether you walk or drive, both are a bit challenging, it is something that is a sight to behold. The panoramic views of the Pilbara Region are breath taking. But you also get a look over the town and the close by mining. It gives you a real perspective of how big the mining industry is in this part of Australia, but more importantly you also het a perspective of how big the area is. Luckily there is still so much untouched beauty. It was an amazing experience to stand at the summit and look out across the Pilbara and admire the landscape that has been formed over millions of years. Mother nature is a truly amazing artist. From Tom Price we pass through Karijini N.P. and head to a well known free camp on the eastern edge. Albert Tongolini rest stop is popular for those that are travelling with pets as it is out of the park. But it is a destination of it's own. The campsites run along a ridge that looks over a gully that has been formed by millions of years of water streaming of the ridges. The night sky is so clear, and the milky way puts on a light show better than any man can create. We double back into the National Park and set up at Dales Campground as a base for the next few days. We had enough time to do the Dales Gorge loop walk. It is about 3 hours, and we took our time and had a really good swim at Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool. This was our introduction to Karijini, and our minds are already blown. That wraps up Part 1 of our Karijini series.
