Promenade II from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is the second appearance of the recurring promenade theme. It represents the composer walking through the gallery, this time with a gentler, more delicate mood compared to the bold opening promenade. Context of Pictures at an Exhibition • Composed in 1874 by Modest Mussorgsky, the suite is a piano work inspired by an exhibition of paintings by his friend, architect and painter Viktor Hartmann. • The suite has ten movements, connected by recurring Promenade themes that depict Mussorgsky himself wandering from one artwork to another. • Later, Maurice Ravel orchestrated the suite in 1922, making it one of the most famous orchestral showpieces. About Promenade II Placement: Appears after the first movement Gnomus. Character: Marked Moderato commodo assai e con delicatezza (moderately comfortable, very much with delicacy). Mood: Unlike the bold, stately opening promenade, this second version is lighter, more reflective, and intimate, suggesting Mussorgsky’s shifting emotions as he continues his walk. Function: Serves as a transition, preparing the listener for the next painting-inspired movement, The Old Castle.
