Before Hydraulics: 1940s Scrapers That Killed 1,800 Operators Between 1940 and 1955, an estimated 1,800 American equipment operators died on cable-controlled scrapers. No hydraulics. No safety systems. Just steel cables that could snap without warning. This documentary covers the 10 deadliest cable scrapers of the 1940s, from the LeTourneau Carryall that killed 14 operators on the ALCAN Highway in 8 months, to the Electric Wheel prototype that killed 3 test operators with the technology that was supposed to save them. R.G. LeTourneau designed 70% of all earthmoving equipment used in WWII. Sixth-grade dropout. No engineering degree. His factories produced 10,000 Carryalls, 14,000 bulldozer blades, and 1,800 Tournapulls. His machines built the Pacific airfields, the ALCAN Highway, and every post-war suburb from Levittown to Los Angeles. They also killed operators at a rate the industry called "acceptable losses." 🔔 Like and Subscribe to @constructionlegends for more: / @constructionlegends ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 - August 1942: Private Ray Donnelly 1:00 - How Cable Scrapers Worked 4:31 - #10 LeTourneau Carryall Model LW 6:52 - #9 Wooldridge Carry-All 9:07 - #8 LeTourneau Tournapull Model A 11:22 - #7 Caterpillar No. 70 12:41 - #6 LeTourneau Gondola Series 14:33 - #5 LeTourneau Mountain Mover 16:07 - #4 Caterpillar DW-10/DW-15 17:48 - #3 LeTourneau Super C 19:36 - #2 Tournatractor Pusher System 22:20 - #1 Electric Wheel Prototype 26:14 - The Final Death Toll 28:58 - What Replaced Them 📺 WATCH NEXT: ▶️ World's Biggest Scrapers 2026: • World's BIGGEST Scrapers 2026 That Will Bl... #construction #heavyequipment #documentary #history #letourneau #scrapers #earthmoving #constructionequipment #vintagemachinery #industrialhistory
