James has been feeling very pleased with himself as his red paint gleamed in the sunshine. As soon as he reached the junction, he sees Percy coming down the line. James is surprised to see him as he expected Percy to be at the station by now, Percy tells him that the cars have troublesome but James says that's no excuse as Sir Topham Hatt relies on them to be on time. James puffs away, leaving Percy to think James is a bossy buffers. James soon arrives at Knapford Harbor, it's Market Day and the harbor yard is filled with the sweet smell of fruit from far lands. Strawberries, Oranges, Melons and Banana's were carefully loaded into James' cars and he soon sets off for Knapford. On the way, he boasts to Thomas about him being reliable and how he has pity on Percy for not being the same as him. Thomas predicts trouble for James, meanwhile, Percy is back in the yard and busy shunting and has the cars under better control. But the stationmaster has brought news that James' brakes have jammed and they need Percy's help. Percy goes to James' rescue and as he arrives, he teases James and says how jammed brakes aren't reliable and that "nothing should stop us engines". Percy's driver interupts the conversation and asks Percy if he can push James' fruit cars. Percy is soon coupled up to James' cars, he sets off but he can't see in front of the train and he doesn't see that the switch had failed and that he had been diverted into a siding. Percy crashes into the buffers, squashed fruit squirts all over him, then Sir Topham Hatt arrives and tells Percy that he isn't to blame for the switch failure but he also says that he isn't running a "jam factory". That night, the shed is silent until Thomas speaks up and tells the engines that they all make mistakes sometimes and sometimes, when you help out in engine in need, things can go wrong. Thomas also mentions that you can learn a lot from mistakes and that "we're really useful engines after all".
