These verses show exactly the type of counterfeit that still tries to consume our world today. Let’s not put God in the same category as the world because the world belongs to Him so whatever good you think you see, if Christ is not at its foundation, it is false. There is only one true God and there is only one way to receive salvation (1 Kings 8:60; Rom. 10:9-10). There will always be counterfeit to God’s truth so we must pray for discernment. We also need to understand that discernment comes from knowing the word of God (i.e., scripture). You cannot discern if something is not Christ-like until you understand God’s nature but to understand God’s nature, you must spend time in His word. If we are going to fulfill our god-given assignment, then we must have discernment or we’ll get pulled off track by counterfeits. We’ll settle for the wise men and sorcerers instead of the power of the Spirit. We’ll build our house on sinking sand and never make it to our Promised Land. Jesus warned us that our eye is the lamp that provides light for the body. When your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness and how deep that darkness is if you think it’s the light (Matt. 6:22-23).
