Journey filmed on Saturday 4th September 2021 on the 1700 Redhill to Reading service. Skip to: Redhill (depart) 0:00:33 Reigate 0:05:13 Betchworth 0:09:27 Dorking Deepdene 0:12:23 Dorking West 0:14:29 Gomshall 0:19:49 Chilworth 0:26:54 Shalford 0:30:50 Guildford 0:37:17 Wanborough 0:44:16 Ash 0:47:00 North Camp 0:51:50 Farnborough North 0:56:30 Blackwater 1:01:09 Sandhurst 1:04:57 Crowthorne 1:08:42 Wokingham 1:13:49 Winnersh 1:17:26 Winnersh Triangle 1:18:05 Earley 1:19:05 Reading 1:22:48 Note that as this service had a long dwell time at Guildford the wait at that station has been cut out of this journey. Services along the full length of the North Downs Line are all operated by GWR currently using class 165 Networker Turbo trains but these are now being replaced by the class 769 Tri Mode converted from class 319. Other operators also use parts of this route. GWR currently operate 2 trains an hour on this route, 1 fast and 1 stopping. The stopping service calls at Wokingham, Crowthorne, Sandhurst, Blackwater, Farnborough North, North Camp, Ash, Guildford, Shalford, Chilworth (2 hourly), Gomshall (2 hourly), Dorking West (2 hourly), Dorking Deepdene, Betchworth (2 hourly), Reigate and Redhill. During peak hours on weekdays stations served 2 hourly are served hourly. The fast service calls as Wokingham, Blackwater, North Camp, Guildford, Dorking Deepdene, Reigate and Redhill before running non stop to Gatwick Airport. Note that on weekday peak hours the fast service stops at all stations between Wokingham and Ash. Earley, Winnersh Triangle, Winnersh and Wanborough are served by South Western Railway with Winnersh and Wanborough receiving very limited GWR calls. Wanborough is served by the half hourly all stations Guildford to Farnham via Aldershot service and the other 3 stations are served by the half hourly London Waterloo to Reading via Ascot service. Southern also operate 2 trains an hour from Reigate to Redhill as part of the London Victoria to Reigate service. This route is partially electrified using 3rd rail DC electrification between Reading and Wokingham, Ash and Guildford, Reigate and Redhill. Because there are no plans to electrify the line throughout is the reason why GWR is currently introducing class 769 units on this route which will operate under electric power on electrified sections and on diesel on other sections. As well as taking advantage of electrified sections the class 769 will increase capacity on the route as they will all be 4 carriage units compared to 3 carriages on the class 165 which currently operate on this route.
