Thomas Bloch, glassharmonica. On this video, the glassharmonica is played live with an orchestral playback during a private rehearsal to exercise and prepare an upcoming concert. The orchestral playback is based on a recording made for a CD published by Klarthe, "Symphonie N°1 & concertos" with Orchestre Victor Hugo, Jean-François Verdier (cond.), David Guerrier (horn), Nicolas Baldeyrou (clarinet) and Thomas Bloch / available on www.klarthe.com. No copies of the Harmonichord are known to exist today but the mechanism of the glassharmonica can be considered a cousin. The harmonichord was an instrument in the form of a giraffe piano, developed in 1809 by Johann Gottfried Kaufmann (1752 - 1818) and his son Johann Friedrich (1785 - 1866). The strings were set to vibrating by indirectly transmitted friction thanks to rotating wooden cylinder covered in leather and rosined. This work was written in May 1811. The composition of the orchestra is as follows : 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, strings and harmonichord. While we're waiting for a video of the complete work recorded in concert, we thought it would be interesting to listen to a part of the Rondo to hear how the glassharmonica version sounds.
