i am the mackerel It's morning and the beeps keep happening. As time has progressed they've grown increasingly louder, and they occur more and more frequently. The birds retreat as the sounds confuse them. Just yesterday one of them smashed into your window and you stared, helplessly, as it fluttered on the driveway before limping away. It's unclear where it got the cane. It's morning, though, and they keep happening. Sometimes you imagine some distant place, somewhere you might go that is too far away for the sounds to reach you. You've been caught staring off into space thinking about it more than once, although usually your reverie is interrupted by one or more of them. Beep. Beep. Beep, motherfucker, beep. It's worse today though because you can't get in to your device to stop them. "Your Device Didn't Recognize You." It's written on the screen. In the mirror you look the same, to you, but self recognition is not what matters anymore. Of course you know that. Whatever these things see now is well outside the bounds of your own visual acuity. The beeps will continue, building, increasing, unrelenting, and you will sit, running your finger over the scanner, shoving your face into the camera, typing, futilely, at the little, square keys. You wonder if maybe, if you stare long enough, if you think hard enough, you'll find that you, also, do not recognize you. Beep, motherfucker. Beep.
