Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 -1975) wrote this, his first symphony, as a 19 year old music student. It was first performed in 1926 in Leningrad. He would go on to write 15 symphonies in total. In this early work, one can hear echoes of some of the other modern Russian composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev, although there are many aspects of it that would be found in his later symphonies. Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) was a great proponent of Shostakovich and introduced many of the latter's works to the West. (His recording of the Shostakovich 11th with the Houston Symphony is superb.) This recording of the 1st was made in Carnegie Hall thus there is quite a bit of "air" in the recording. The label, United Artists, is not one that I come across often in my classical music records It is a reasonably good recording considering that stereo was still new in 1959. The record was pressed by Plastylite - a company known primarily for producing jazz records - notably for the Blue Note label.
