(23 Jun 1999) Serbo-Croat/Nat K-FOR troops have been attempting for days now to secure the streets of Pec so that the local Serb population feels safe enough to stay. So far however, K-FOR has not been able to achieve this. Although some Serbs have returned from Montenegro, the majority of the Serb community in Pec is either in hiding, under K-FOR protection in monasteries or churches or have fled the city. As ethnic Albanians return to the destroyed city, vigilantism is on the rise with Serb homes being burnt and looted. Three Serb civilians were murdered in their homes in the last three days. The Serb civilians continue to flee Pec despite pleas from Italian K-FOR soldiers who are in the region and promising to protect them. This Serb man tells of how his father-in-law was murdered and how he has not been able to see the body. SOUNDBITE: (Serb-Croat) "This is the seventh day and I can't eve pick up the body to bury him. It's the seventh day. My father-in-law was killed not far from here - about 10 kilometres. Yet, I can not got to collect the body. I try getting there, through forests, I try passing churches but I cannot get there."
