Energy Minister Pledges Expanded Electricity Supply Across South Sudan Juba, South Sudan — January 22, 2026 — South Sudan’s Minister of Energy and Dams, Agok Makur Kur, has pledged to expand electricity supply across Juba and other parts of the country, outlining both short-term and long-term measures to address persistent power shortages. Kur made the remarks on January 22, 2026, during a visit to the Ezra Power Plant in Gondokoro, operated by the Israel Pact Group. The visit marked one of his first field engagements since assuming office. The minister said the government has developed immediate and long-term plans aimed at improving electricity generation and distribution nationwide. “As the new Minister of Energy and Dams, I have a plan. We have a short plan and also a long plan,” Kur said. “The short plan includes visiting key power facilities across the country, and in the coming month, I intend to open the power plant in Rumbek.” Kur said he received a detailed briefing from the management of the Israel Pact Group on the current production capacity of the Ezra Power Plant. According to the briefing, 79 megawatts are currently in use, while an additional 21 megawatts remain to be developed. The Israel Pact Group has pledged to complete the remaining capacity within the coming months, the minister said. Kur also revealed that the government is working on plans to import electricity from Uganda, a move expected to improve power supply in several towns. “Power transmission from Uganda has already reached Nimule, and it is expected to extend to Juba and other towns,” he said, adding that the ministry is prepared to cooperate with Ugandan authorities to facilitate the transmission. The minister acknowledged the challenges faced by citizens due to limited access to electricity and assured residents of Juba that power coverage in the capital would improve. He emphasized that electricity is essential not only for household use but also for security and economic activities. Speaking during the visit, Samson Ezra, Managing Director of Ezra Group, welcomed the minister’s appointment and said the engagement would motivate the company’s staff to address existing challenges. “This visit will encourage our team to work harder and ensure that the challenges we are facing are handled,” Ezra said. “Together with the new minister, we are confident that we will connect the rest of Juba.” Ezra added that the company has begun producing concrete electricity poles in large quantities to support the expansion of the power distribution network. The visit to the Ezra Power Plant comes as the government intensifies efforts to improve electricity generation and distribution across South Sudan. #SouthSudan #SouthSudanNews #BreakingNews #Juba #JubaNews #Energy #EnergyNews #Electricity #ElectricitySupply #PowerShortage #PowerGeneration #EnergyDevelopment #Infrastructure #PublicInfrastructure #ServiceDelivery #NationalDevelopment #EconomicDevelopment #TradeAndDevelopment #AgokMakurKur #MinistryOfEnergy #GovernmentOfSouthSudan #PublicPolicy #EzraPowerPlant #EzraGroup #IsraelPactGroup #Gondokoro #Nimule #CrossBorderEnergy #RegionalCooperation #UgandaPower #EastAfrica #RegionalStability #SBMedia
