Asking a client about their budget is the first big step toward negotiating better freelance rates. The only problem is…how do you get the client to open up about their budget? Having the money conversation can be tricky to navigate. That’s why we’re giving you 7 BIG tips, so you can negotiate like a pro. Who are we? We’re Indy! A platform for freelancers, giving you the productivity tools, the resources, and the knowledge to help you own it: your work, your success, and your way of life. 00:00 Introduction 00:31 Who are we? 02:08 Ease into the money conversation 02:54 Ask open-ended sales questions 04:10 Help educate the client 05:22 Speak to the right person 05:54 Ask about past projects 06:28 Send a rough estimate 07:30 How to deliver price quotes 08:36 Outro 09:05 Bloopers Here’s how to ask about the client’s budget: Tip #1: Ease Into the Money Conversation Before mentioning the budget, start your freelance proposal talking about how excited you are about working with the client on this project. This shows your client that you care about their needs, and warms your client up to having the money conversation. Tip #2: Ask Open-Ended Financial Questions Asking questions about your client’s business will help you transition smoothly into the budget talks. Tip #3: Help Educate the Client Not every client knows that their project budgets might be undervaluing your work, so it’s our job to teach them how much time and resources it will take to finish the project. Tip #4: Focus on the Value You Offer Having a successful money conversation with your client is all about framing. Focus on the outcomes that your work will lead to for their business. Tip #5: Speak to the Right Person Depending on the organization you're working with, you could be chatting with a single individual or multiple people. Find out who the key financial holder on the project is. Tip #6: Ask About Past Projects Asking the client about their past projects will help you get a feel for the size of budgets they’re used to. This can be very helpful for knowing how to negotiate. Tip #7: Send a Rough Estimate By now, you’ll have learned whether this is a project you want to pursue or not. If it is, great! Send them a rough estimate in an email. Why not over the phone? Because it will give you more time to think about your price quotes without the pressure of needing to give an immediate response.
