A very poor morning session spent at Romford on the Great Eastern Mainline where we see plenty of services from TFL Rail (Elizabeth Line), Greater Anglia and a single freight train courtesy of Freightliner. This wasnt the original station. The first station in Romford was opened in 1839 as a single island platform. The current station was opened in 1844, before this time the Eastern Counties Railway were running at 5ft gauge on its track. Around the time that this station was opened the Eastern Counties Railways started to change up the gauging of their network by going to the standard gauge of 4ft 8 1/2. This new station was still built in an island format much like its predecessor. However when it came to 1860 the station was remodelled to have platforms at either side of the tracks. Not to long after the station was opened a goods yard was built which was fairly common practice with most stations around the country at that time. It wasn't until the 1930s when the station was once again remodelled because of the increase in traffic which meant that the track was upgraded to quad running, this subsequently meant that the station had to be fiddled around with, the station was given 4 running platforms up until 1934 when the fifth was built as a bay platform for terminating trains. Electric trains started using this station in 1949 with trains running from London Liverpool Street to Shenfield. Greater Anglia no longer call at Romford with all services now being operated by the Elizabeth Line. My next film will be from Reading on the Great Western Mainline.
