Amuchin Nango struggled with epilepsy for years while growing up in Monrovia, Liberia. There was little awareness of epilepsy in the country and no treatment was available. The stigma he experienced drove him to drop out of school while he and his family searched for a cure. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) opened a project for epilepsy treatment in Monrovia in 2017. A year later, Amuchin was finally receiving the care he needed. He was able to graduate from high school and start a career. "Now, I'm a classroom teacher,” he said. "Through the help of MSF, I can stand before students or before people. I'm imparting knowledge now.” About 80 percent of people with epilepsy live in middle- and low-income countries and three-quarters of them do not receive the treatment they need. Epilepsy is the world’s most common chronic neurological disorder, yet in many places, it remains misunderstood. People living with the disease are often stigmatized and rejected by their communities. For many young people, this can mean forgoing education and participation in society. In Liberia, MSF is helping more than 1,200 patients access epilepsy treatment and overcome social stigma. As part of this effort, MSF staff are helping children return to school after social stigma caused them to drop out.
