Pella is an ancient Roman town situated within the foothills of the Jordanian Valley, about 17 miles south of the Sea of Galilee in Jordan. Today, only a few remains of its glorious Roman architecture are still visible as the once flourishing town turned to ruins, long forgotten over thousands of years of abandonment. According to archaeologists, in the Neolithic time, Pella was initially settled by the Natufians, the ancient ancestors of the Middle Easterners who appeared in the Levant between 12,500 BC and 9,000 BC. Archaeologists believe the Natufians were the first semi-sedentary foraging people in world history who invented bread-making and brewing beer. That said, the people of ancient Canaan invented baking bread and brewing beer, according to findings by archaeologists. From the Natufians to the Canaanites, Bella became prosperous during the mighty Roman Empire and Byzantine reign through trading and being at the crossroads between Arabia, Palestine, and Syria. In Pella, archaeologists found near the ancient Roman ruins a nearby temple ruins from the Middle Bronze Age, constructed by the ancient Canaanites about 1650 BC. This Canaanite temple is one of the largest in Jordan. The general site of antiquity stood abandoned and yet, fascinating, as you realized its once rich history of culture and wealth. It was also a refuge city for people fleeing the injustice of wars and religious bigotry from all corners of the Middle East; Pella provided a safe refuge for those fleeing political and religious persecutions from other parts of the Levant, especially Jerusalem. Pella was an important city for the Romans, but what baffled me the most was the lack of well-preserved Roman temples and complexes that I've seen still intact in my explorations of the other Roman Decapolis cities in the Jordan, for instance, like Jerash and Gadara. The remains of large complexes and buildings were obsolete in Pella, except for the remains of a small outdoor theater, a bath, and a basilica from the roman and byzantine periods, with some of its beautiful columns still standing as a stark reminder of its glorious Roman past. As I walked amid the ruins of Pella, my mind took me back to its ancient history, thousands of years before the Romans, the Byzantines, the Crusaders, and the Arabs; suddenly, a feeling of sadness overwhelmed me when I filmed this video. Come with me to explore the old Roman City of Pella in Jordan.
