dm-drogerie markt GmbH & Co. KG has recently put its new logistics center at Weilerswist near Cologne into operation. Covering an area of 65,000 m² acts as the central distribution site and is one of Europe's most advanced logistics centers. High requirements are demanded of the packaging technology so that the palletized goods can be transported securely to the individual stores. The BEUMER stretch hood® S high-performance packaging systems are designed to pack 100 pallets an hour; in Weilerswist they each handle 90 an hour. The height of the pallets is measured by ultrasound. That enables fully automated processing of different stack heights and calculation of the ideal amount of film required. The recyclable film, which is just 60 micrometers thin, is then automatically cut and sealed. The resultant stretch hood is then drawn over the palletized goods. The products are thus protected on five sides without any additional film sheet and without a wrapping film. The packaging protects the goods against the elements and against dust and moisture and ensures a high level of security during transit. The load carrier and goods from a stable unit. The energy-efficient BEUMER systems consume just 0.04 kilowatt-hours per pallet. After this step, the pallets are completely packaged. Stretch hood technology not only improves packaging performance, but also visibility of the goods thanks to the smooth surface of the film hood.
