Shiraito Waterfall — known locally as Shiraito no Taki (白糸の滝, meaning “Waterfall of White Threads”) — is a serene and picturesque cascade nestled in the forested highlands just north of Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is a beloved destination for nature enthusiasts and a peaceful highlight of any visit to the Karuizawa region. What Makes It Special? The waterfall stretches an impressive 70 meters across. Rather than plunging dramatically from above, delicate strands of water gently stream down the curved rock face, forming a wide, shimmering curtain. This soft, thread-like flow is what inspired its poetic name — resembling countless white silk threads draped over stone. Unlike many waterfalls that are fed by rivers, Shiraito Waterfall is sustained by underground spring water. The water filters through volcanic rock formed by nearby Mount Asama before emerging evenly along the rock wall. This natural filtration system keeps the flow steady and remarkably clear throughout the year, even after heavy rainfall. How to get there? From JR Karuizawa Station, take a Kusakaru Kotsu bus bound for Kusatsu Onsen (approximately 25 minutes). From the “Shiraito no Taki” bus stop, it’s about a 5-minute walk to the falls. If traveling by car, you can access the site via the scenic Shiraito Highlandway toll road, where parking is available nearby.
