Stephanie Penta - Cannabis Misuse: A Moderator Between Emotion Dysregulation and Acuity of BPD

A presentation for the Innovations in the Science of Cannabis Conference, May 2021, McMaster University Stephanie Penta explores the complex relationship between problematic cannabis use, emotion dysregulation (ED), and borderline personality disorder (BPD) acuity. Using data from an ongoing study at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton in collaboration with the Peter Boris Center for Addictions Research at McMaster University, this research highlights how cannabis misuse interacts with specific facets of emotion dysregulation—such as non-acceptance of emotional responses and limited access to emotion regulation strategies—to exacerbate BPD symptoms. The findings suggest that incorporating harm reduction techniques and strategies to reduce cannabis use could significantly improve treatment outcomes for individuals with BPD. The study involved 80 participants from the Borderline Personality Disorder Service, with results showing that higher levels of cannabis misuse and emotion dysregulation correlate with increased BPD acuity. However, when these factors are low, BPD symptoms are less severe. This research underscores the importance of addressing both cannabis use and emotion regulation in BPD treatment programs, offering a new perspective on improving mental health outcomes.
