It was previously known as Thebes in ancient Egypt and is home to the Luxor Temple and more amazing sights. Within the Luxor Temple, located on the east bank of the River Nile, there is so much history of Egypt to soak up as the complex was ceremonial ground for kings and queens. Here's some more information: In Ancient Egyptian it is known as “pet resyt”, the southern sanctuary. It was built approximately 1400 BCE. Two 25m obelisks once stood here, one remains and the other in Paris. In front of the temple is the beginning of the Avenue of Sphinxes, which linked between the Luxor Temple and El Karnak Temple 3km north. Luxor temple was a ceremonial place for coronation of Kings and Queens. Great Court of Ramses II is surrounded by two rows of lotus-bud columns. Mainly, built by the New Kingdom pharaohs Amenhotep III and Ramses II. Abu Haggag Mosque is located within the temple, standing on its columns. So you can be looking at two different Egyptian eras at the same time. Walls are decorated with scenes of pharaohs making offerings to the gods.
