On this trip for Keystone Rail Productions, we pay a visit to a very small railroad in Williams Grove, PA, which is close enough to Harrisburg but far enough away to be in a secluded setting, to visit the Williams Grove Railroad. Although the route may be less than a mile long, the motive power for the mornings excursions greatly make up for the length of the railroad. Pennsylvania Railroad 643, an 0-6-0 classified as a B4a, is currently the only operating steam locomotive from the famed Pennsylvania Railroad, or known to some as the "Standard Railroad of The World". Built in 1901 by the Pennsylvania Railroad itself in the Altoona shops, 643 still continues to operate nearly 120 years after being constructed. The Williams Grove Steam Engine Association would fire her up for the annual "Railroad Days" for 15 minute excursions down the less than 3/4 mile of track. She would be sporting a Lunkenheimer 3 chime whistle, and a unusual hand rung bell. We follow the locomotive track side and aboard the short trips. Today's excursion would feature two open air coaches built out of flatcars, and one genuine PRR steel sided caboose, No. 477130. The railroad also owns and operates two historic diesel locomotives, a small collection of freight cars, a wooden PRR N5b cabin car, or caboose, and a steam crane. PRR 643 really put on a great show today, and please join us track side and on board to see the last of Pennsylvania Railroad steam in action. History of PRR 643: Pennsylvania Railroad 643 is a 0-6-0 switcher built in 1901 by the Pennsylvania's own Altoona shops classified as a B4a. The 643 would only serve 17 years with the Pennsylvania Railroad, and would then be purchased by the Central Iron and Steel Company, located in Harrisburg, PA. She would then undergo a few changes, including being renumber to No. 5, the fitting of a new boiler without the Pennsy's trademark belpaire firebox built by the H.K. Porter Company, and a new larger welded tender. When the steel mill had closed in 1959, the end was looking bleak for the small 0-6-0. However the newly formed Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association purchased her. She was re-lettered back to her Pennsylvania Railroad scheme and number, and she would remain there ever since pulling short excursions for many to enjoy.
