Pitot tube. A pitot tube is a simple device used for measuring the velocity of flow at the required point in the flowing stream. In its simplest form it consists of a glass tube (large enough for capillary effects to be negligible) bent at right angle. The tube is dipped vertically in the flowing stream with its lower open end facing the direction of flow and upper open end projecting above the water surface in the stream as shown in the Fig. 16.38. The water rises up in the tube, due to pressure exerted by the flowing water.
