This is a happy story with a rather sad ending. In 1959 Santa’s Village and Disneyland were celebrating their 4th successful year in business. A group of Inland Empire businessmen and politicians decided that they could compete with both of them, so they purchased 550 acres (3 times bigger than Disneyland) near Running Springs to build a combination amusement park/ski resort/ice slating rink/zoo surrounded by hotels and restaurants. They named it Enchanted Forest The dream lasted 3 years under 3 diffeent owners before it completely collapsed. I loved Enchanted Forest for a very unique reason. Every time I went there there was never any crowds or lines. They had cool stuff for a 10 year old. My favorite was the ladybug ride which was essentially Marketeer gold carts (made in Redlands) that looked like ladybugs. Rather than tell the whole story I made this video that tells the whole story based on newspaper article headlines. Included in the video are one of my grandmothers videos of the actual rides. As you will see we had “the run of the park”. What I thought was the best feature is what lead to the downfall. When they filed bankruptcy they listed 2-1/2 million in debts. They ended up recovering less than $500,000. As far as I know, the film in this video may be the only film in existence of what once was an exciting dream of many people.
