Erling Haaland had given Man City the lead in the first half, but Albion roared back thanks to second-half goals from James Milner and Brajan Gruda to claim their first Premier League win of the 2025/26 season in dramatic fashion. Manchester City dominated large parts of the first half, with Haaland missing several chances before finally putting Pep Guardiola’s team ahead on his 100th Premier League appearance. The Cityzens looked comfortable going into half-time, but Brighton showed resilience and determination after the break, with the home fans at the Amex in full voice. The starting XI for Brighton & Hove Albion was: Bart Verbruggen in goal; Joel Veltman, Lewis Dunk, Jan Paul van Hecke and Maxim De Cuyper across defence; Jack Hinshelwood, Carlos Baleba and Diego Gomez in midfield, while Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh provided width with Danny Welbeck leading the line. The turning point came on the hour mark when Fabian Hurzeler made four substitutions, bringing on James Milner for Baleba, Brajan Gruda for Gomez, Georginio Rutter for Welbeck, and Yasin Ayari for Hinshelwood. From that moment onwards, Brighton & Hove Albion looked a completely different side. In the 67th minute, Lewis Dunk’s volley struck the arm of Matheus Nunes, and Albion were awarded their third consecutive Premier League penalty. Veteran midfielder James Milner stepped up against his former club and calmly slotted home, becoming the oldest penalty scorer in Premier League history and the second-oldest goalscorer overall, behind Teddy Sheringham. His celebration paid a a touching tribute to his former team-mate at Liverpool, Diogo Jota. As the game entered the final minutes, the Amex erupted when young German winger Brajan Gruda latched onto a Kaoru Mitoma through ball, showed composure to round goalkeeper James Trafford, and fired into the net for his first Premier League goal. The finish sealed another famous Brighton win against Manchester City and sparked wild celebrations on the South Coast.
