How to build a glass staircase | Staircase renovation project | George Quinn

If you are just starting your renovation project, you should check our other tutorials, especially how to install newel posts and how to install handrail and base rail. The main stair parts needed for this project are: handrail and base rail from our Urbana range and Rake, Landing and Return glass panels. The first step is installing our base rail, but before we do we must mark the height at which we will install our handrail. To do this, we measure 900 mm from the top of the string up the newel post. This will be the top of your handrail. For the landing area this measurement should be 1000 mm. After cutting the base rail to the correct length and angle of your stairs, glue and screw it in place. We recommend using screws no less than 70 mm long. To install the handrail, after measuring and cutting it, we are going to use these treaded inserts which tread into the handrail, and this hex bolt which will pass through the newel post and tread into the insert. First, we need to drill a 10 mm hole at either end of the handrail. We must bore the 10 mm hole in the centre of the handrail and to help do this, and to stop the drill bit moving around and ensure that we bore at the correct angle, we are going to screw this guide to the end of the handrail. This is simply a scrap of wood with a 10 mm hole bored through the centre. We can now install the treaded insert. We can now carry on and install the handrail. To hide our fixings, we are going to use these bolt covers. This requires a 16 mm hole bored in the front of the newel post to a depth of 20 mm and an 8 mm hole bored through either side, to allow our hex bolt to pass through the newel post. Glue and bolt the handrail in place, making sure that the handrail is not twisted, as this will make fitting the glass more difficult. Next, we calculate the number of panels required and the size of the fillets. To do this, we measure the base rail, and divide by 350 and round the figure down to the next whole number. This will give you the number of glass panels that is required. For the size of the fillets, we multiply the number of panels by the panel’s dimension according to the pitch of your stairs. For example, these stairs are 40 degrees and at 40 degrees, our glass panel measures 260 mm. This measurement will change depending on the pitch of your stairs. We need to multiply 260 by the number of panels required and subtract this total from the length of the base rail. Then, divide the answer by the number of panels plus one to get the size of the fillets. Building regulations state that the spacing between the panels can be no greater than 99 mm. So, if your fillets’ size is more than 129 mm, add another panel to your calculations. With the handrail and base rail you will receive a few different size of fillets: the large one for the handrail, the medium one for the base rail and the small one is for covering over any unsightly screws or nails you may have after installing the others. Cut the first 4 fillets: 2 or the base rail and 2 for the handrail. Don’t forget to notch the first fillet in the handrail to ensure you get past the treaded inserts we installed earlier. Apply clear silicone to the grooves in the base rail and the handrail, then, install your first 2 fillets, followed by a glass panel and your next 2 fillets again. Install another glass panel and 2 fillets as you have done before and continue on making your way up the stairs. Don’t forget to notch the last fillet in the handrail for the treaded insert. We are using brads to secure the fillets, but, if you prefer, you can also screw them. To calculate the number of panels for the landing area, measure your base rail and divide by 299 and round up to the next round number. Multiply this number by 200 then, as you have done before, subtract your total from the length of the base rail and divide by the number of panels plus 1. This will give you the size of the fillets. Again, as before, the same building regulations apply: the space between the panels can be no greater than 99 mm. You can now carry on and install the fillets and the glass panels for the landing area. If you have a small return on the handrail, you can use one of our return glass panels which are not as wide as a standard panel.
