After reading his book on Dr BR Ambedkar, a friend of author and former BJP minister Arun Shourie had once asked him why was he against the leader. To this, Arun had promptly replied, “Arre bhaiya, we are just like him.” Like Ambedkar, “we read and write,” he told his friend, “which is a wonderful thing.” While he admires many things about Ambedkar, who “unlike his followers today” believed in reading and writing, Arun doesn’t agree with a lot the Dalit icon believed in. “Advocating for village republics of/for scheduled castes…in retrospect, is not a good thing,” he says. “ Probably, today, he [Ambedkar] would have given a different idea.” In conversation with Abhinandan Sekhri, Arun, author of ‘Worshipping False Gods: Ambedkar and the Facts Which Have Been Erased,’ talks about why we won’t revisit his writings on Ambedkar. His writings are all facts and where the facts led him, he says.
