Bishops Castle got its name from the fact the bishop of Hereford in the 12th century built a castle here to defend the village from Welsh invaders, but later on other invaders included English Lords including the Lord of Arundel and the Lord of Oswestry and Clun, the castle after these invasions sadly the castle was destroyed and very little remains. In the Middle Ages castle and village were partly in Wales and England, now the Welsh border lies 1.5 miles to the west. Kerry ridgeway is a popular walking area and is an ancient trackway of Bronze Age origin, this trackway runs from the town. At one time the town had 2 micro breweries, one still survives and that is the Three Tuns, the oldest working micro brewery in Britain, the other one was at the Six Bells, this was run by my cousin Neville Richards, known locally as big Nev, he packed in and sold the pub and it no longer brews beer.
