Regardless of what might be argued etymologically, the conceptual meaning of the word “Israel” is clear. In spirit and truth (Jn 4:23-24), the word “Israel” is a title of sonship, of one who holds fast, enduring to the end. 1. Heb 3:14,6; Mt 24:13. A character trait that defines sonship with God (in spirit and truth) is perseverance, endurance. None of us is perfect, and all of us stumble even on our best of days, but those born again cannot “drawback to perdition” (Heb 10:39). II. Ex 4:22/Hosea 11:1/Mt 2:14-15…Rom 8:29/Gal 3:26/Rev 21:7.
