Stroke Awareness Month is the perfect time to spotlight a new technology for stroke survivors who experience mobility challenges in their arms and/or hands that shows promising results when paired with therapy. After not having arm or hand mobility for years after a stroke, individuals like Debby Robertson now have the opportunity to regain upper-extremity function thanks to a device called Vivistim, an FDA-approved vagus nerve stimulating implant that can enhance recovery when paired with therapy. Debby’s occupational therapist, Michaela Torraca, OTD, OTR/L, and clinical leader for Stroke and Brain Injury at Sheltering Arms Institute’s Hanover outpatient center, is leading the implementation of Vivistim technology at Sheltering Arms Institute. “I’m really excited that we’re able to offer this service and technology because we have so many stroke survivors who reach a point where they are functionally plateauing and are seeking out some other method to jumpstart those connections in their brain,” Torraca said. “It’s, in my opinion, one of the next steps in stroke recovery and rehabilitation to strengthen brain connections and ultimately improve arm and hand function.” Visit our newsroom to learn more about how this device works, the results we’re seeing, and eligibility for this treatment: https://shelteringarmsinstitute.com/n... #Stroke #StrokeRecovery #StrokeAwarenessMonth #StrokeSurvivors #Vivistim #VivistimTechnology #vagusnerve #vagusnervestimulation #occupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapist
