Acts 15 Series 1 Episode 11 Strengthening the believers Acts 15:01-21 – THE JERUSALEM COUNCIL We are studying one of the greatest theological issues that shook the early church. The issue was, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved." This issue continues to challenge us, but clothed differently. Salvation is by faith in Jesus. We must understand faith through the life of Abraham. The Jews have not attained righteousness because they have sought righteousness by the works of the law. Paul and Barnabas refuted this doctrine that was being introduced to the church. We can see the reasons for their defence of the Gospel. Circumcision is associated with Baptism. This theology that was entering the church intended to replace the covenant relationship of God and His people with the ritual of circumcision. This theology was also seeking to replace the sufficiency of the cross of Christ for our salvation. The church had to take an immediate step to set right this theological error that was entering the church. It is a wonderful process to observe and learn from the Jerusalem Council. Every aspect of the process of the Jerusalem Council has much to teach us. The apostles and others from Antioch were sent to Jerusalem. They were being hospitable. Hospitality is at the very heart of God's mission. As Paul and Barnabas visited Phoenicia and Samaria they strengthened the believers by sharing with them how the Lord was opening the door of faith to the Gentiles.
