Clinch Mountain Backstep was written by banjo player Ralph Stanley. It is an interesting minor modal tune (based on A minor pentatonic), with an odd half bar in the second section. In this Old Time/Bluegrass fiddle lesson I first demonstrate a very simple version of the melody, and explain how the G natural and C natural notes can be bent upwards slightly to temper the contrast against the major chords. I show how open string drones can improve the sound. I then play a version based on the video by 81crowe, and finally do an improvised solo.
