Undergraduate Research | A Chemistry Major's Guide

This is a step by step guide into how to get into research as an undergraduate in college. Now a lot of you may know that research is huge in college. It is one of the biggest pads to your resume and an be a ton of fun while also being the best learning experience you ever get. Now especially especially if you are planning to go in a higher education graduate degree such as a masters or pHD this is hugely important. First things first is I recommend getting into research as soon as possible. Either as a freshman or sophomore. More time in research will give you more lab time and you can see if you truly like doing research. Because research is what actual stem people do as a career its best to see you are going to like the career before you fully commit to it. This gives you time to switch things up if necessary. This also lets you show grad schools and jobs you were in research for a couple of years at least greatly adding to your experience and padding up the application. Next we wanna see how to actually get into research now first things first go to each of the professors your interested ins research page and check what they are doing their research about. pick research that you are actually interested in and like because you may be working in that lab for the next few years. Actually knowing what you will be researching is super important to show that you are actually interested in the research thats going on. Once you find the profs you are interested in I want you to start drafting emails to these professors. Now I highly recommend that you make these emails individually and have them tailor made. Don’t be one fo those students asking to get into research sending a copy paste email because when you have a tailor made email it really shows you’re interested in the subject area. So what to include in the email? Well first things first you start with an intro to who you are and what your situation and class is. some profs will also list on their websites etc that you should send a transcript in when you apply to make sure your gpa is high enough for the lab. This will vary with each prof so just make sure you add what they ask for. Next you should put a bit about why you are interested in that professors research and why you want to be a part of their lab. Be as sincere as you can here and try and write a bit about how working in their lab aligns with your personal research and academic goals. I also think its a good idea to mention if you are aiming to go into grad school because a lot of research profs and research labs will prioritize people aiming for grad school because they know those people really need research experience for their grad application and they know that those students will be going on into research in the future and that working in the lab will benefit them greatly. With that said don’t lie about your grad school ambitions just be as honest as you can on what interests you. And trust me profs can tell when you are actually interested in the material. Once you have the email drafted and looked over for typos send it in and then give your profs some time. They have a lot on their plate and talking in a new researcher isn’t always the priority. This may even take longer than usual (as in months) currently because the pandemic and the fact that profs can’t risk their phd students getting sick and they don’t have systems in place for undergrads to start working in a lab during a pandemic. Its really hard to get the logistics of it and training a new undergrad so don’t be discouraged if it takes a while or a prof can’t respond. Sometimes they will let you know that you can ask again next semester or any other options. Now what I can recommend is sending a reminder email after maybe a few weeks to a month (this time frame is longer than usual cause the pandemic but the same applies afterwards) just letting them know you are still interested in the research. Once your professor email you back they will generally let you know if there is a spot for an undergrad researcher in their lab. If there isn’t there isn’t much you can do and you gotta move on. If there is then good job! Next they will probably ask to have a interview with you. At this they will just ask you some simple questions about what your interested in and what you wanna research maybe gpa and any other academic things they want to know. These interviews are really nothing to stress about they are pretty casual and generally just professor wanting to get to know you a bit more. Just be honest answer why you are interested ask any questions you have about the lab and get to know their research past what the website says.
