Ravana, the ten-headed king of Lanka, often remembered as the villain of the Ramayana, was also a supreme devotee of Lord Shiva and a vast ocean of knowledge, with his ten heads symbolizing wisdom spread across all directions. Through his devotion, he composed the divine Shiva Tandava Stotram, received the Kailash Palace as dakshina, and transformed Lanka into a golden city. Yet beneath his devotion lay arrogance, which led him to attempt lifting Mount Kailash itself. Shiva humbled him with just the press of a toe, and from Ravana’s anguished cry came his very name. Later, he tried to take Shiva’s Atmalinga to Lanka, but through Lord Ganesha’s cleverness, it became fixed in Gokarna, where the Mahabaleshwar Temple still stands today. Ravana was a great scholar, composer, and inventor of the Ravanhatta, yet his story teaches that devotion without humility becomes mere power, and power mixed with pride ultimately deprives even the greatest devotee of its true reward.
