Born on February 13, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Robert Charles Sproul was raised in a Roman Catholic family before experiencing a decisive conversion to evangelical Christianity during his college years. This spiritual awakening marked the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of truth, driven by an intense desire to understand who God is and how human beings are to live in light of God’s revelation. Sproul’s intellectual gifts quickly became evident as he pursued formal theological training, earning his undergraduate degree from Westminster College before studying at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and later at the Free University of Amsterdam. During this time, he was deeply influenced by the Reformed tradition and by mentors such as John Gerstner, whose rigorous approach to theology, logic, and historical Christianity profoundly shaped Sproul’s thinking. From the beginning of his ministry, Sproul was convinced that ideas matter and that theological ideas matter most.
