First, this isn't really about the typical soil jar test. while I have learned a couple of new to me details about how to do one, this is just a bit of curiosity over can a previous sample, which has remained in the jar for well over a year, still give a usable result. I do go over the new method from the "Becoming a Soil Detective" course I'm taking via the "Regenerative Living" website (https://www.regenerativeliving.online..., which is being taught by Cornell soil scientist John Beeby. 1) Shake the jar for 20 min if possible, not 1-3 or so. 2) Once the sample is set down, start a 1-hour timer. At the 1-hour point, mark the top of the settled layer. This is the sand. 3) Restart the 1-hour timer. At the end of that time, mark the new level. This is the silt. 4) At 3-7 days, whenever it appears the water is no longer significantly cloudy, mark the third layer. This is the clay layer. If the soil has aggregation that is resistant to shaking, a drop or two of liquid detergent can help. To these instructions I have made two minor changes. A) I switched from a basic mason jar, to a taller and narrower jar, this should make any layers a bit thicker and more visible. B) Use of masking tape for the marking. It's removable. It has me considering having labels made, which include the directions as well as area to mark. Perhaps removable to be placed on a paper in a binder or sent to a customer for record keeping.
