On Saturday 14th October 2017, another major milestone for the Diesel Traction Group based at Ferrymead Heritage Park was achieved when the first engine testing of the sole surviving member of the Di class, no. 1102 built by the English Electric Australian works in Queensland in 1966 was taken place. Around lunch time, Dg 772 took Di 1102 around the turning triangle on the Ferrymead Railway in preparation for the first start up and bearing checks on the engine while stationary. After these checks were done, the Di moved under its own power, for the first time in almost 30 years since the withdrawn of the NZR Di class in 1989 and ran some slow test runs under its own power with Dg 772 dead in tow. We capture the start-ups, and the test runs along the back leg of the turning triangle including some cab footage. In the afternoon, the long hood doors were re-attached and Di 1102 ran a couple of more runs along the Branch into Moorhouse station before the DTG crew had a group photo taken and drove Di 1102 into her shed for the first time under her own power. All that is left to do to get 1102 fully operational is further testing plus some more cosmetic repairs and a repaint before it can be certified for use on New Zealand’s national rail network, a big congratulations is well deserved for the DTG team and we look forward to seeing more exclusive Di action in the future!
