M S P S L Routine - Sequence/System of Car Control

In this video I describe to my daughter how the ‘Mirrors, Signal, Manoeuvre’ Routine described in the Highway Code is expanded in other DVSA Texts (Driving - The Essential Skills) to give a full sequence for approaching any Hazard safely (M S P S L A D A): Mirrors, Signal, Position, Speed, Look (Access, Decide, Act). On the road (video time code 7 minutes), I then give a Demonstration Drive to illustrate how this sequence can be used when approaching hazards; and how repetition of simple routes round a block containing those hazards can be used to develop this safe sequence as your normal driving ‘habit’. We explore turning right at a series of Roundabouts; then reverse the route using the sequence to approach turning left at roundabouts. Next I explain to my daughter how the M S P S L (A D A) sequence relates to Roadcraft’s Advanced Driving sequence/‘System’ (I - P S G A) to illustrate how fundamentally important the DVSA sequence is to formulating a safe driving plan at any level of driver development (video time code 22m 40s). I then Demonstration Drive this on Left and Right Turns from a National Speed Limit road, talking through the phases of the system as I drive (video time code 31m). N.B. For the purposes of the video, this was a ‘Lecture’ / ‘Demonstration Drive’ not an interactive coaching session with Q&A. The demonstration drive is of how an experienced driver would approach the hazards using the sequence, so the L-driver can see what they are ultimately aiming for. Clearly it is not driven at a pace an L-Driver would use during the initial stages of developing car control and the M S P S L sequence. This video was filmed in August 2020, so features the 2013 Edition of RoadCraft; the 2020 updated edition of RoadCraft was published in both book & video format two months later, so get this new version for current best practice.
